Orthodontics Q & A
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that corrects bite problems, also known as malocclusions. It harnesses your body's natural ability to remodel its own tissue by applying light, constant force to gently reshape bone, and move teeth into better positions.
Misaligned teeth can be coaxed into a more flattering and functional position. They aren't fixed rigidly in their supporting bone; instead, they're held in place by a hammock-like structure called the periodontal ligament, which is very responsive to forces placed on the teeth. Orthodontic appliances move teeth by careful application of light, constant pressure. This force can be applied via metal wires that run through small brackets attached to your teeth (braces), or via the semi-rigid plastic of clear aligners.
Why should I consider orthodontic treatment?
Of course, orthodontic treatment can correct a less-than-perfect bite. Orthodontics aren’t all about your looks, however. Properly aligned teeth help you to bite, chew, and even speak more effectively. They are also easier to clean, which helps keep your mouth free of tooth decay and gum disease.
The bite problems that orthodontics can correct include underbites, crossbites, and excessive overbites, in which the upper and lower teeth don’t close together in the proper position. Orthodontics may also be appropriate for open bites, in which a space that remains between the top and bottom teeth even when the jaws are closed, as well as crowding or excessive spacing.
What are orthodontic appliances?
Some examples of orthodontic appliances include:
- Traditional metal braces
- Inconspicuous clear or tooth-colored braces
- Clear aligners
All of the treatments are available at Revive Dentistry and for all ages. Of course, orthodontic treatment is especially effective in childhood, as it can take advantage of the body’s natural growth process. But healthy teeth can be moved at any age.
Several new technological developments — including tooth-colored ceramic braces, clear aligners, and invisible lingual braces — have made orthodontic appliances less evident and enhanced the treatment experience for adults.
Before treatment, the doctors carefully screen for signs of periodontal (gum) disease, which will need to be brought under control before treatment begins.
What happens when orthodontic care is complete?
Once you’ve achieved your smile goals, you will need to wear a retainer as directed. Teeth naturally tend to drift back to their original locations — which is the last thing you want after you've gone to the trouble of straightening them.
